The picks

1. Pressleaf — clean PDFs of articles and full AI chats, made on your own computer

Pressleaf prepares the page — menus, ads, cookie banners, pop-ups and sticky bars removed, lazy images loaded — then hands it to Chrome’s own print engine, so the PDF has selectable text and math, code and non-Latin scripts look as they do on screen. Pick Article, Whole page or Chat (full ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini conversations, every turn labelled). Remove parts lets you click away anything else, dark pages print in light colors, and Save Markdown gives you a text copy. It works on pages behind a login because it prints the tab you already have open, and it reads a page only after you click it (Chrome’s activeTab permission).

Free with no daily limit, no watermark and no account. Pro ($19 once or $9 / year) adds one-click saving without the print window, saving every open tab at once, headers and footers, and custom file names. Pressleaf is coming soon to the Chrome Web Store; its free Chat to PDF and Markdown to PDF web tools work today.

2. PrintFriendly — an all-in-one toolbox: print, PDF editor, screenshots and cloud saving

PrintFriendly’s Chrome Web Store listing describes printing web pages without ads, sidebars, pop-ups and clutter and saving them as clean PDFs, plus a built-in PDF editor (edit text and annotations, fill out forms, highlight), full-page screenshots, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini export, and saving to Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive and Zotero. Choose it if you want many tools in one extension. For a side-by-side view see Pressleaf vs PrintFriendly and the PrintFriendly alternative page.

3. Save as PDF (PDFCrowd) — one-click download of public pages through an online converter

The Save as PDF add-on downloads the current page as a PDF in one click. Its store listing says it is powered by the PDFCrowd HTML to PDF online service, and that for security reasons it cannot create PDFs from pages that require a login (webmail, online banking, shopping carts). PDFCrowd’s add-on page says the tool is free to use and that buying a license removes the PDFCrowd branding from generated documents. More: Save as PDF (PDFCrowd) alternative.

4. FireShot — full-page screenshots saved as PDF or images

FireShot (“Take Webpage Screenshots Entirely”) captures the entire page, the visible part or a selection. Its store listing lists saving a screenshot to disk as PDF (with links), PNG or JPEG, capturing all tabs to PDF or image, and batch capture from a list of URLs; the Pro version adds a PDF with direct links and text, single-page or split into pages, plus an editor and more export options. The listing says screenshots are stored locally. Choose it when you want a picture of exactly how the page looks.

Print Edit WE is a free, open-source (GPL) extension for editing a web page before printing. Its store listing lists deleting, hiding and formatting elements, editing text, and removing adverts and sidebars, with a Preview button that shows how the page will print; it can also save the edited page as HTML or MHTML. Print from it and choose Save as PDF in Chrome’s print window. Choose it when you want fine, manual control over every element.

6. Chrome Print → Save as PDF (built in) — nothing to install

Every copy of Chrome can print a page and choose Save as PDF as the destination: press Ctrl+P (⌘+P on a Mac). It is free, unlimited and works on any page you can open, including logged-in ones. It prints the page as it is, so menus, ads and banners come along and dark themes stay dark; on AI chat sites a long conversation can be cut off (why). Pressleaf uses this same print engine, after cleaning the page first.

Pressleaf popup on a long article: Article, Whole page and Chat modes and a Save as PDF button.
