How to save a dark mode web page as PDF with a white background

Updated

Short answer: use Pressleaf. Click its icon on the dark page and press Save as PDF. Its Print dark pages in light colors option is on by default: Pressleaf notices the dark theme, switches the page to light colors for the printout — dark text on a white background — and Chrome saves it as a PDF with selectable text. The page on your screen is not permanently changed.

Step by step

  1. Open the dark page and click the Pressleaf icon (or press Alt+Shift+P, or right-click → Save page as PDF).
  2. Choose Article for just the content, or Whole page for the full layout minus pop-ups and sticky bars.
  3. Leave Print dark pages in light colors on (it is on by default, under Page options).
  4. Press Save as PDF and pick Save as PDF in Chrome’s print window. The PDF has dark text on a white background.

How Pressleaf turns a dark page white

  1. It checks the content. A dark background, or light text, marks the page as dark.
  2. It uses the site’s own light theme where it knows how. On ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini it flips the site to light mode while saving, then puts it back.
  3. Otherwise it recolors the printout. The content prints as dark text on white, code blocks on light grey, links in blue. This applies to the PDF only.
  4. Background colors are left out by default. Keep background colors stays off unless you want it, so dark panels and banners don’t eat ink.

You can also remove anything else first: turn on Remove parts and click it. Ads, menus, cookie banners and sticky bars are dropped automatically — see how to save a web page as PDF without ads.

Dark AI chats

For ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, Pressleaf’s Chat mode copies the conversation into a clean page with dark text on white, every turn labelled. Can’t install extensions? Paste the chat into the free Chat to PDF tool — its PDFs are white too. See how to save a Claude conversation as PDF and how to save a ChatGPT conversation as PDF.

Questions

Why does my PDF come out black?

Chrome’s Print → Save as PDF prints the page the way it looks on screen. A dark theme is part of that look, so the PDF can come out with a dark page, or with pale text that is hard to read on paper.

Can I just turn off “Background graphics” in Chrome’s print window?

That drops background colors and images, and on some sites it is enough. Where the site also sets its text in a light color, the text can stay pale on the white paper. Pressleaf makes the text dark as well.

Does Pressleaf change how the site looks?

Only while it saves. On ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini it switches the site to its own light theme and switches it back afterwards; on other sites the light colors apply to the printout only.

What about code blocks and links?

When Pressleaf recolors a page itself, code blocks are printed dark-on-light-grey and links stay blue, so they still stand out.

Can I keep the dark design on purpose?

Yes. Turn off Print dark pages in light colors and turn on Keep background colors under Page options.

Does it work on dark AI chats?

Yes. In Chat mode, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini conversations are copied into a clean white page before printing. Without an extension, the free Chat to PDF tool also prints pasted chats on white.

Is it free?

Yes. Saving PDFs with Pressleaf is free with no daily limit, no watermark and no account.
