ChatGPT long conversation PDF cut off when printing — how to save the whole chat
Short answer: ChatGPT keeps the conversation in its own scrolling box, and Chrome prints that box at the height of your screen — so a long chat comes out as one page, or one page plus blank ones. Don’t print the page; print the conversation. Click Pressleaf on the chat and press Save as PDF: it copies every turn into a clean document and Chrome saves it as a multi-page PDF, start to finish. No extension? Copy the chat into the free Chat to PDF tool. Both are free, with no watermark.
You are not the only one
People have been asking about this for a long time:
- OpenAI Developer Community, February 2025: “Issue with Printing Long Conversations in ChatGPT” — when printing a long conversation, only the first page appears in the printout.
- OpenAI Developer Community, October 2026: “Long ChatGPT conversations no longer render completely while scrolling” — full-page PDF and screenshot tools capture only part of a long chat.
- Adobe Community, September 2026: “Long ChatGPT conversation cut off when converting to PDF” — the PDF stops partway through a very long conversation.
Why the PDF gets cut off
- The chat lives in a scrolling box. ChatGPT’s layout is an app screen: a sidebar, a message box and, between them, a box that scrolls. Print it and Chrome keeps that box at its on-screen height, so everything below the first screen is clipped.
- Very long chats can be drawn on demand. As the October 2026 report above describes, tools that capture the screen — full-page screenshots, print-to-PDF of the page — get only what the site has drawn at that moment.
- Page tools don’t know what the conversation is. They print buttons, the sidebar and the message box along with the chat, and split code blocks and tables wherever the page ends.
Fix: save the whole chat with Pressleaf
- Open the long ChatGPT conversation and click the Pressleaf icon (or press Alt+Shift+P). It recognises the chat and selects Chat mode.
- Press Save as PDF. Pressleaf copies every turn into a clean document in a new tab — no scrolling box, no sidebar, no message box.
- The new tab shows the exact document that will be printed — scroll through it to check the first and last messages are there.
- In Chrome’s print window choose Save as PDF. Chrome lays the chat out over as many pages as it needs. Pressleaf Pro skips this window and saves straight to Downloads.

What you get: a title, then every turn in order, labelled You or ChatGPT; code blocks, tables and math kept; dark mode printed on white; selectable text. Prefer plain text? Press Save Markdown. More on the format in how to save a ChatGPT conversation as PDF.
Page breaks that make sense
- Code blocks, tables, images and math are kept on one page when they fit.
- Each “You” / “ChatGPT” label stays with its message instead of being stranded at the bottom of a page.
- Long code lines wrap, so nothing runs off the edge of the paper.
- Paper size (Letter, A4, Legal), margins and text size are yours to set.
No extension: Chat to PDF
Open the chat, press Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C, paste into Chat to PDF and press Save as PDF. The pasted chat is printed as a normal document too, over as many pages as it needs. Step-by-step: ChatGPT to PDF without an extension.
The very longest chats: read them from your export
For a conversation that runs to hundreds of messages, the most complete source is the file ChatGPT gives you. Request Export data (Settings → Data controls), open conversations.json from the ZIP in Chat to PDF, search for the chat by title and save it. The tool reads every message from the file — nothing depends on what is on screen — and the PDF is made in your browser.

Questions
Why does ChatGPT print only the first page?
The conversation sits inside its own scrolling box that is exactly as tall as your window. Chrome prints that box at its on-screen size, so you get roughly one screen of chat — the rest is clipped, or the following pages come out blank. The page itself is not built for paper.
Will changing Chrome’s print settings fix it?
Not reliably. Scale, margins and paper size do not change the height of the scrolling box, so the chat is still cut. The fix is to print the conversation as an ordinary document, which is what Pressleaf and Chat to PDF do.
Does Pressleaf split code blocks and tables across pages?
It keeps code blocks, tables, images and math on one page when they fit, keeps each “You” / “ChatGPT” label with the message it belongs to, and wraps long code lines so they are not cut off at the page edge. Long answers flow naturally onto the next page.
My chat is huge. What is the most complete way to save it?
Use ChatGPT’s Export data and open conversations.json in the free Chat to PDF tool. It reads the conversation from the file, not from the screen, so every message is there however long the chat is, and it opens export files up to 300 MB.
Does this work on other AI chat sites?
Yes. On Claude and Gemini, Chat mode makes the same clean copy. On DeepSeek, Perplexity, Copilot, Grok and Le Chat, Chat mode scrolls the conversation to the top to load older messages, unrolls the scrolling box and hides the sidebar and message box before printing.
Is the text in the PDF selectable?
Yes. Chrome’s own print engine makes the PDF, so text can be selected, copied and searched — it is not a long screenshot cut into pages.
Is it free?
Yes. Pressleaf and Chat to PDF save PDFs with no daily limit, no watermark and no account.
