How to save a ChatGPT conversation as PDF (free, no extension)
Short answer: open the conversation in ChatGPT, press Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C (⌘ on Mac), paste it into the free Chat to PDF page and press Save as PDF. You get a clean PDF of the whole chat — each message labelled, code blocks, tables and math intact — with no extension, no sign-up, no watermark, and nothing uploaded.
Step by step
- Open the ChatGPT conversation (or its share link) in your browser.
- Click anywhere in the conversation, then press Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C.
- Go to pressleaf.roledawn.com/tools/chat-to-pdf and paste. Each message appears in the preview, labelled “You” or “ChatGPT”.
- Check the title (it becomes the file name), then press Save as PDF and choose Save as PDF in the print window. Want plain text instead? Press Download Markdown.

Open Chat to PDFUsing OpenAI’s official export
If you want all your chats, OpenAI’s help article “How do I export my ChatGPT history and data?” describes the built-in export: sign in, open Settings → Data controls, choose Export data → Export, and confirm. ChatGPT emails you when the ZIP is ready (it can take up to 7 days), and the download link expires 24 hours after you receive it. The ZIP holds your conversations as data files rather than PDFs — open conversations.json or chat.html in Chat to PDF, pick a conversation and save it.

Questions
Does ChatGPT have a built-in PDF export?
Not for a single chat. ChatGPT’s Export data option (Settings → Data controls → Export data) emails you a ZIP of your chat history; OpenAI says it can take up to 7 days to arrive and the download link expires after 24 hours. You can open the conversations.json or chat.html file from that ZIP in Chat to PDF and save any one conversation as a PDF.
Can I just paste the share link?
Open the share link in your browser, then copy the page (Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C) and paste it. Chat to PDF does not download share links for you: OpenAI’s terms do not allow automated copying of ChatGPT pages, and copying it yourself keeps the chat on your device.
Why not just press Ctrl+P on the chat?
You can, but the PDF comes out as the page looks: sidebar, message box and buttons included, and on long chats part of the conversation can be left out because it sits in its own scrolling area. Pasting into Chat to PDF prints only the conversation, labelled turn by turn — see why a long ChatGPT PDF gets cut off.
Is the conversation uploaded anywhere?
No. Chat to PDF runs in your browser and the page is not allowed to make network requests; your browser’s own print engine makes the PDF.
Does this work for Claude conversations?
Yes. Paste a Claude chat the same way, or open the conversations.json file from Claude’s data export — see how to save a Claude conversation as PDF.
Can I do it on my phone?
Yes. Open the chat in your mobile browser, select all and copy, paste into Chat to PDF and tap Save as PDF — your phone’s print screen lets you save or share the PDF.
